MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Scott Wimmer, who tested the Richard Childress Racing No. 33 Nextel Cup car earlier this week and stood atop the RCR No. 29 hauler during qualifying Friday at Martinsville Speedway, seems destined to join the organization next season.
Neither Wimmer nor an RCR spokesman would confirm Wimmer's hiring. RCR has openings in its Busch Series program and has run a fourth Nextel Cup car at select races this year.
"I'm real close to what I'm going to do next year," Wimmer said with a smile as he stood outside the RCR hauler. "I'll probably have something lined up here in the next few weeks. I'm excited about it.
"It will be with a real strong company, and hopefully I can show what I can do."
Wimmer said he was unsure if he would actually drive the No. 33 Nextel Cup car in the race at Homestead.
"I haven't talked to Richard about that at all yet," Wimmer said. "We talked about a bunch of different things and different options and places I wanted to go and things I wanted to do.
"He had this test lined up, so we went down there and did that."
The 30-year-old Wimmer drove for Morgan-McClure Motorsports for much of the Nextel Cup season and in the No. 66 Brewco Motorsports entry in the Busch Series.
Wimmer has 104 career starts in Cup, with a career best of third in the 2004 Daytona 500, and 120 Busch Series starts, with five victories.
"We went down to Homestead and really just tried to help these cars out and try to get RCR a championship," Wimmer said. "It was great to go down there and drive a real competitive car.
"I actually wrecked a primary car the first day out. I felt kind of bad about that. I was able to get in one of [Clint] Bowyer's cars, and we had a good two-day test. It ultimately was just to help Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick to try to win this championship."
