AVONDALE, Ariz. - Ward Burton says he's close to signing to return to the No. 4 Morgan-McClure car next season in the Nextel Cup Series.

And he would like to run even more races.

Burton, who has run three races for the Morgan-McClure team this year in his return to Cup racing after a nearly two-year hiatus, is in negotiations to drive for the team next year and hopes to land a part-time Busch ride to help in that effort.

"We're working on a Cup deal, so I feel pretty positive about that," Burton said Friday afternoon. "I'd really like to find one of the Busch programs that could use me as part of the program and run some conjunction races with them, whether that be five or 15," Burton said.

"I feel like I could be able to help them, the [Morgan-McClure] team could be able to help them. Consequently, we could help each other, give me some experience on Saturday for Sunday."

The 45-year-old Burton has finishes of 26th at Martinsville and 25th at Texas this year.

"I don't feel like I've been leaving anything on the table," Burton said. "It's been a lot of fun with the camaraderie of the guys and all the parts you love about the sport so much. We've made some progress. Obviously we need to run better."

Could Burton go from running no races in a season to more than 40?

"I am ready to go," Burton said. "I feel like in some ways I'm starting over a little bit. I'm up for that challenge."
