DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Sprint Cup driver Juan Pablo Montoya was behind the wheel with the 3 1/2 hours remaining in the Rolex 24 At Daytona as he eyed a second consecutive victory for himself and a third consecutive one for the Chip Ganassi Racing team.
But his eyes were focused on the car ahead of him, the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing car that was leading Montoya in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series event.
It is expected that Red Bull Racing Sprint Cup driver AJ Allmendinger will get back in the No. 6 seat for about the final three hours of the event in what could be an exciting battle for the victory between Allmendinger with Montoya and Ganassi road-racing ace Scott Pruett.
Pruett, Montoya, Dario Franchitti and Memo Rojas have combined to lead 151 of 587 laps in their Lexus.
Allmendinger's team, with co-drivers Burt Frisselle, Ian James and John Pew, has led 131 laps in its Ford.
Running third, five laps behind, was the Bob Stallings Racing car being driven by two-time defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. Gearbox problems at about 7:45 a.m. likely ruined the chances for that team, which has led 85 laps, to capture the win.
Kurt Busch, driving for Penske-Taylor Racing, was running fifth as of 10 a.m. EST. It likely would be his last stint in the car as the race will end at 1:30 p.m. EST. His team is seven laps behind.
Veteran Cup driver John Andretti is part of a team in 14th. Michael Waltrip Racing's Michael McDowell was driving the Spirit of Daytona Porsche in 19th.
The No. 66 production-based GT car co-driven by TRG Motorsports Craftsman Truck Series driver Andy Lally was 12th and second in class, two laps behind the class leader.
