Unleaded fuel to be used in Busch, trucks

The Busch Series will begin using unleaded fuel July 29 at Gateway International Raceway and continue for the next three races, and the Craftsman Truck Series will use unleaded at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Aug. 4 and Nashville Superspeedway on Aug. 12, NASCAR vice president Jim Hunter said Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.

After stopping for a short evaluation period, both series will return to the unleaded fuel toward the end of the year. The move is a prelude to a possible switch to unleaded in the Nextel Cup Series for 2007.

"We'll run several races and then evaluate," Hunter said. "We'll come back later and run the rest of the year in Busch and trucks."

After a four-week evaluation period, Hunter said, the unleaded program will resume Sept. 23 at Dover for the Busch Series and at Las Vegas for the trucks and continue through the season-finale.

Also, NASCAR has consulted with ARCA, and the Talladega ARCA race Oct. 6 will be run with unleaded fuel, giving NASCAR engine builders a chance to test unleaded on a restrictor-plate track.
