Ryan Newman almost won races, challenged for a spot in the Chase For The Nextel Cup and did win a lot of poles in 2007 but ultimately missed the Chase for the second year in a row.

Newman, a 30-year-old native of South Bend, Ind., who began full-time racing in Cup with his Penske Racing team in 2002, wound up 13th in the final standings and amassed more than $5.8 million in purses this season.

During the offseason, SceneDaily is taking a look at the top 30 in 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup driver points, and here¹s how Newman¹s season unfolded:

By the numbers: Newman collected five poles, earning a spot in the preseason Shootout next year. He posted seven top-five and 15 top-10 finishes, though he also endured an incredible nine DNFs.

Season highlights: Obviously all of his pole-winning runs were highlight performances, but Newman also finished as a runnerup three times over the course of the year, including back-to-back second-place finishes at Dover and Pocono.

Key setbacks: DNFs. Newman bumped his career total of unfinished races to 39 with his nine this season. Five were caused by engine failures.

Newsworthy moment: Newman was continually linked to other teams in the rumor mill, but he has not changed his allegiance. He also underwent a postseason crew chief change, with Michael Nelson moving into another role in the Penske organization and Roy McCauley taking over the spot for Newman heading into 2008.

In his words: "I think both Penske teams have been good all year with the car of tomorrow. We haven¹t had the greatest finishes, but we¹ve been competitive. Hopefully we can build on that for next year in the car of tomorrow on those short tracks, but more importantly have a leg up on the intermediate tracks."
