For Reed Sorenson, this season must have felt a bit like a roller-coaster ride. He came close to victory on a couple of occasions, performed better than he finished on many others but still ended the year seeking his first Cup victory and his first season-ending appearance in the top 20 in drivers points.
Sorenson, a 21-year-old native of Peachtree City, Ga., earned a career-best finish of third in his second full season of Cup competition in the No. 41 Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge. He gained two positions over his inaugural season, finishing 22nd in drivers points in 2007 and earned more than $4.3 million in purses.
During the offseason, SceneDaily is taking a look at the top 30 in 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup driver points, and here's how Sorenson's season unfolded:
By the numbers: Sorenson earned three top-five and six top-10 finishes en route to his final points position.
Season highlights: Atlanta Motor Speedway. Sorenson was leading the race when he ran out of gas a lap short in the spring event at the track and then was in position to challenge again before he was jammed behind a late crash there in the fall. He managed to avoid incident and finish a career-best third in that November race at his hometown track. Sorenson won the first pole of his career, at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, becoming the youngest in the history of the track to do so.
Key setbacks: The car of tomorrow. Sorenson and his team just didn't perform as well in the new model used in 16 races this year as they did at some of the series' other tracks, where they showed marked improvement.
Newsworthy moment: Sorenson was the quiet driver in the Chip Ganassi Racing lineup, laboring in the shadow of high-profile rookie Juan Pablo Montoya and outgoing teammate David Stremme. The biggest headline came when he and his team were docked points when their car was found to be too low following inspection at Talladega Superspeedway following his 10th-place finish in that race.
In his words: "We're looking forward to starting over next year. We just had a lot of times where we should have finished average, and we ended up wrecked. We need to focus on cutting out the weak spots, and we'll be all right."
