TALLADEGA, Ala. - Thirteen teams worked on "cars of tomorrow" Monday morning as they began a test session at Talladega Superspeedway.
Using restrictor plates with holes of 15/16ths of an inch in diameter (1/16th bigger than what was used in the Nextel Cup race Sunday at Talladega), drivers took to the track for their first restrictor-plate test of the new cars since Daytona in January.
The car of tomorrow is scheduled to debut at Bristol next spring and make its first restrictor-plate appearance next October at Talladega.
"NASCAR wants to make sure they get the right restrictor plate and gear ratio for the teams," said Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson. "I think that is one of our main goals in the test."
In addition to Johnson, those testing were Ricky Rudd (Wyler Racing), Dave Blaney/Michael Waltrip (Michael Waltrip Racing), Jeff Green (Haas CNC Racing), Mike Skinner (Team Red Bull), Joe Nemechek (MB2 Motorsports), Juan Pablo Montoya (Chip Ganassi Racing), Scott Riggs (Evernham Motorsports), Kerry Earnhardt (Dale Earnhardt Inc.), Clint Bowyer (Richard Childress Racing), Carl Edwards (Roush Racing), Greg Biffle (Roush) and Jamie McMurray (Roush).
The teams will likely spend about three hours doing single-car runs before drafting later in the day.
The car of tomorrow will run in 16 races next year. The car is boxier than the current version and has an adjustable wing at the rear of the car and a front splitter - an adjustable shelf underneath the front valence that can be changed to affect front downforce.
