Staten Island councilmen reported united against track

Thursday, May 11, 2006

New York City Councilman Michael McMahon has announced his intention to vote against a proposed NASCAR track on Staten Island, making opposition unanimous among the borough's three city council members, the Staten Island Advance reports.

In a statement released to the paper Monday night, McMahon questioned the traffic plan of International Speedway Corp., which has bought land on Staten Island for an 80,000-seat NASCAR track.

"It was always clear to me that the issue of traffic that paralyzes our roadways had to be addressed by ISC. That was never accomplished. Moreover, the presence of NASCAAR would only worsen our dire traffic conditions," McMahon is quoted as saying in the statement.

Councilman James Oddo told the Advance Tuesday night that the proposal no longer stands a chance with all three councilmen against it.

"Game. Set. Match. [Andrew] Lanza, Oddo and now McMahon," Oddo said. "It's over. Now that there's a completely united front, it's over."

McMahon added this in an interview with the paper: "If I were ISC, I would approach the city and try to sell the land. Get some good will out of it, and move on to the next race."

ISC officials didn't seem overly concerned about the statements.

"These preemptive decisions are disappointing. Nonetheless ... we don't have any decision to just throw up our arms and go, 'Oh, well,'" Michael Printup, ISC project manager for Staten Island, told the paper. "At this point, I think it's too early in the process to say, 'OK, well [he] doesn't like this program. We have to go do something else.'"
