Mike Skinner heads to Phoenix International Raceway with his largest Craftsman Truck Series points lead in weeks and the same truck he took to victory at Martinsville Speedway last month.
The Bill Davis Racing driver reclaimed the championship lead last week and now has a 57-point edge over Ron Hornaday. He could technically clinch this weekend, though it's a long shot. Skinner would need to win and lead the most laps with Hornaday finishing last without leading a lap in order to be crowned champion.
The odds are good that Skinner could lead the first lap of Saturday's Casino Arizona 150. He scored his 42nd career series pole last weekend and has tied the season record, which he already held, of 10 pole positions.
Interestingly enough, Skinner's first truck start came at Phoenix in February 1995. He beat Terry Labonte at the line to take the win in that race and went on to win eight races and the championship that season.
In seven starts at Phoenix, Skinner has five top-five and six top-10 finishes, including a pair of wins in 1995. His average finishing position at the track is 5.3.
"I am very excited about Phoenix," Skinner said. "We normally run pretty well here, and I have a lot of history here as well, so hopefully we can capitalize on that this weekend. It is coming down to the wire, and we have got to do all we can to run well this weekend if we want to keep our hopes alive in Homestead."
