Sherman looking to return

Brent Sherman, who started the year as a rookie with BAM Racing, still has NASCAR Nextel Cup plans in his future.
Sherman said June 9 that he hopes that his family-operated team will run at Chicagoland and Phoenix this year. He will run Fords and hopes to get the number 04.
The 32-year-old, who has sponsorship from Serta, said he most likely will remain with his family team instead of trying to bring money to an existing Cup operation. Sherman made six races with BAM, with a best finish of 29th in the Daytona 500. He left the team after it decided to replace him for the May 6 race at Richmond International Raceway, the second time that had happened this year.
BAM has since hired driver Kevin Lepage and changed crew chiefs.
"I guarantee you BAM is going to start running better because they made a lot of changes," Sherman said. "That's what I was hoping to happen. It just didn't work out. The first change was me. ... If [they were] going to keep taking me out of the car, it does me no good.
"So it was in my best interest to leave."
Sherman said he will not bring sponsorship to a team just to get a Cup ride. He added that he doesn't have an unlimited amount of funding to bring to a team.
"It's so tough to bring sponsorship to teams, and basically your future is in their hands," Sherman said. "Unless it is a sure-thing opportunity, I don't know if it's the best thing to do or not. ... I refuse to bring sponsorship to another team other than we're trying to run our own program because it's just too hard to trust that they're doing the right things with your money."
Sherman plans to run select ARCA races the rest of the year. He was second in points in the series in 2004. He said the key was he was able to run well at that level with not many people but people he trusted.
"I know when I show up to the race track, I know I can drive the car into the corner, and I know it is going to be there for me," Sherman said. "I
just never got to that point there. I'm hoping that down the road maybe an opportunity will open up."
