Johnny Sauter is currently without a ride for the 2008 Sprint Cup season, but he believes he has done enough this year to prove he deserves another year at the sport's highest level.
Sauter, who is being let go from Haas CNC Racing at the end of the season, is 31st in points while the team is 33rd. It is one of only two teams - the other being the Ginn Racing No. 14 team that eventually merged into the No. 15 Dale Earnhardt Inc. team - that began the season outside the top 35 and is currently in the top 35.
Sauter has a best finish of fifth at Richmond last month and was second in the Nextel Open to qualify for the Nextel All-Star Challenge last May. He has not dropped out of the top 35 all year.
"This year has just been an amazing year," Sauter said in a statement.
"For a first-year team to have a top-five finish as well as a top-10 finish is a testament to what we are capable of.
"We have qualified up front, run up front and finished up front. We finished second at the Open, which was awesome, and sixth in the all-star race running with the best our sport has to offer."
Sauter, 29, has 63 career Cup starts with his best finish the fifth at Richmond. He has 183 career Busch Series starts with three wins.
"I am not sure what the future holds but at the end of the day all I want to do is race and be competitive, whether it is in Cup, Busch or trucks," Sauter said.
