RCR's No. 29 Busch team to clinch owners title
Carl Edwards has already wrapped up the Busch Series drivers championship, but Richard Childress Racing's No. 29 team will clinch the owners title this weekend when Jeff Burton starts the Ford 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The No. 29 team, which has used Burton and Scott Wimmer as drivers this year, leads Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 team by 194 points heading into the final race of the season. The only way JGR can win the owners title is if it wins the race and the No. 29 doesn't race.
But Burton and the Pat Smith-led crew plan to try to win Saturday's race.
"I try to think about doing the best that we can do for each race," Burton said. "However, knowing that we just need to start the Holiday Inn Chevrolet takes away the pressure for the owners championship, but we still want to go out there and win.
"Scott has done a tremendous job this year, and our Busch program has provided great cars throughout the season. I am excited that we can win this for Richard and Holiday Inn."
The team has four victories - all by Burton - 16 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes this season. RCR's No. 21 team sits fourth in the owners standings.
Burton also has a Nextel Cup victory to go along with his Busch wins this year.
"I know that there are areas that I need to be better in, and that is clear to me," Burton said. "I believe that I am driving as well as I have ever driven, and I think that I am a better driver than I have ever been. I honestly believe that. You can look at the stats and say that I have had better years, but I believe that I am a better driver today than I was 10 years ago."
