RCR won't appeal Busch penalty

RICHMOND, Va. -- Richard Childress says he will not appeal the 25-point penalty assessed his series-leading No. 21 Busch Series team earlier this week for being too low in postrace inspection following the Aaron's 312 last Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.

The penalty dropped driver Kevin Harvick, who was penalized 25 driver points in addition to the 25 owner points penalty Childress incurred, from leading by 299 to 274 points. RCR teammate Clint Bowyer is second in the standings.

"It was one of those deals with the bump-drafting going on that it could have knocked it down a little bit," Childress said. "We made a wedge adjustment on the right side that shouldn't have made that much difference. But we were definitely an eighth of an inch low."

Childress said he hopes that the 25 points does not come back and decide the championship. Not only is Harvick (who has split time in three cars but primarily runs the No. 21) in the lead in the driver points, the No. 21 team has a 283-point lead over the RCR No. 2 team in the owner standings.

"It wasn't anything intentionally done," Childress said. "It didn't help him run second. ... With the bump drafting and wedge changes made, it put us [too low]."
