AVONDALE, Ariz. - Matt Borland, crew chief for Ryan Newman, will miss the final two races of the 2006 Nextel Cup season.
Borland is taking "some personal time off," and team engineer Mike Nelson will lead Newman's efforts this weekend at Phoenix and next weekend at Homestead, a Penske Racing South spokesperson said Wednesday.
Newman and the No. 12 team have struggled this year. Newman, who made the Chase For The Nextel Cup the last two years, is 18th in points with no wins and two poles.
In his first four full seasons from 2002-2005 with Borland guiding his team, Newman never finished lower than seventh in points and collected 12 wins and 34 poles.
