WELCOME, N.C. - Stephen Leicht will drive at least two Nationwide Series races for Richard Childress Racing this season and possibly more.
The 21-year-old Leicht, who drove for Robert Yates Racing the last two seasons, said that the exact number of races he will run in the No. 21 entry depends on sponsorship. Bobby Labonte is slated to drive in 15 events in that car.
Team owner Richard Childress indicated that Leicht could have a full-time ride in the future, especially if NASCAR changes rules that won't allow Sprint Cup regulars to win a championship.
"Have they announced anything on the points system?" Childress said Monday night during the annual NASCAR media tour. "If they fix it where the Cup drivers can't get points, then Stephen Leicht is a guy that we can take and win a championship with."
Leicht had attended a General Motors combine at the urging of RCR and had been negotiating with RCR before he signed with Yates.
"Any races at RCR is better than full-time anywhere else," Leicht said. "I'm proud to say we're back where we wanted to be."
Leicht finished seventh in points, with a win at Kentucky, last year driving for RYR.
"Obviously, there were ups and downs," said Leicht, who started one Cup race in 2006 for RYR. "The biggest good thing was last year, finishing seventh points, having a win and a bunch of top-fives, top-10s.
"I think that is part of the reason I got an opportunity with Richard. We did well enough as a team to show that hopefully I am capable of doing this on the Cup level and give me a shot at the Nationwide Series with Richard."
