Kentucky Speedway studying Fuller crash

Saturday, June 24, 2006

A Kentucky Speedway official says the track expects to make safety changes before the July 8 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in the wake of Jeff Fuller's wreck during last Saturday night's Busch Series race.

Fuller was airlifted to a local hospital, where he was held overnight and released the following day. According to his Web site, he has a broken finger and broken left wrist. Fuller hit a section that has an opening for safety crews.

Kim Crosby is filling in for Fuller this weekend at the Milwaukee Mile.

Mark F. Cassis, the track's executive vice president and general manager, said Friday NASCAR officials and others are looking at possible solutions.

"We are continuing to investigate Jeff Fuller's incident and are working in conjunction with NASCAR and Dr. Dean Sicking of the University of Nebraska Midwest Roadside Safety Facility regarding potential next steps for the portion of the infield retaining wall where the car made contact. Driver safety has been, and continues to be our number one priority. Since our facility opened in June 2000, we have worked with each major sanctioning body to ensure our facility maintains the highest safety standards and have complied with every safety recommendation set forth by NASCAR and the Indy Racing League.

"Through this recent event, we have discovered an area which needs to be addressed. We will have a plan in place before our July 8 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in accordance with the recommendations of Dr. Sicking, NASCAR and the Indy Racing League."
