Rusty Wallace Inc. Racing has hired former driver Shane Huffman to join its No. 66 Dodge Busch Series team - but not as a driver.
Huffman, who was let go by JR Motorsports earlier this year, will serve as car chief for Steve Wallace.
"Shane Huffman is a world-class racing driver and will undoubtedly add a whole new dimension to our team's operations," team owner Rusty Wallace said in a statement. "Just like I was during my career, Shane is really hands-on with the chassis and knows a race car inside and out. He and Steve really get along well, and I know that he will be an enormous asset to our organization."
Huffman has 29 starts in his Busch career, including 28 for Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team. He had one top-five and four top-10 finishes in 18 races this year before being released.
"I'm really looking forward to this next chapter in my career," Huffman said. "I've built and worked on race cars my entire life, and I've always prided myself in my ability to do that.
"I've raced with Steve Wallace for quite a while now - through the Busch Series and [Hooters] Pro Cup - and I know that he has the natural talent and car control to win races in NASCAR. I'm excited about the opportunity to take what I've learned over the years and combine it with Steve's potential behind the wheel. I can't wait to get started."
Wallace, in his first full season in the Busch Series, is 15th in the points standings without a top-10 finish. The team recently announced Steve Darne would finish out the season as crew chief, replacing the departed Tony Liberati. Darne is in his second tenure in that role in 2007, serving as interim replacement for Bryant Frazier.
"I really think that [Huffman is] going to be an enormous help during the races, too," Steve Wallace said. "There are a lot of times when you're on the track, and you're feeling something that you just can't seem to explain correctly to the guys in the pits. Having someone on the pit box who has been there and felt what I'm feeling, like Shane has, is going to give us an advantage."
The team also announced Nick Steger has been named as head of the fabrication department. RWI plans to bring that department in-house for 2008.
