CONCORD, N.C. - Indy Racing League champion Sam Hornish could run the Busch Series race at Phoenix next month if he feels he is ready, Penske Racing officials confirmed.
Hornish, who also won the Indianapolis 500 this year, has tested a stock car at North Carolina (Rockingham) Speedway and plans to test at Iowa Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway before deciding whether to run at Phoenix, Penske Raacing South President Don Miller said Saturday.
"We're going to let him get the feel of the car," Miller said. "If he decides that he's ready, we could theoretically do that [Phoenix race]."
Matt Gimbel, the crew chief for the No. 39 Penske Racing South Busch Series team, will direct the effort.
Hornish is committed to run in the IRL for 2007.
"That is his primary deal," Miller said. "We don't want to interfere with the primary program because that wouldn't be good for the team overall."
