Dale Earnhardt Inc. and director of competition Steve Hmiel have parted ways, the team announced in a news release Thursday afternoon.

The news release said Hmiel's responsibilities have been redistributed throughout the organization and that his replacement will be named soon.

"I have enjoyed a wonderful association with Dale Earnhardt Inc. over the past nine years," Hmiel said in a statement. "It is time for me to pursue other endeavors and reestablish new goals for myself.

"The management team at Dale Earnhardt Inc. has the company headed in the right direction."

Hmiel was the crew chief for Kyle Petty's ARCA win in 1979 at Daytona and later was a crew chief for Terry Labonte and Sterling Marlin at Bill Hagan Racing before serving as crew chief for Mark Martin from 1988-1996.

He joined DEI in September 1998 and also has served as spotter for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

"Steve has been a part of the success of Dale Earnhardt Inc., and we are grateful for his contributions to the company," said John Story, vice president of motorsports. "We wish him well with his future plans."
