Kevin Grubb has reportedly been fired by Brewco Motorsports two or three times in recent weeks, but so far, he's still with the team.
Grubb has been on the hot seat, to be sure, but several media outlets jumped the gun and reported that he'd been released following his disappointing 15th-place run May 4 at Richmond. Brewco Motorsports President Todd Wilkerson, however, immediately denied the rumor and stood by it at New Hampshire.
"The situation is that Kevin is our driver and he is our driver for a long time, hopefully," Wilkerson said. "As long as we can keep working toward the same goal, then he'll be our driver. We've had some problems, but I think every team out there has problems.
"When you're running bad, tensions start to build. But I think everything's going in the right direction now. We've gotta have the finishes to back them up. But Kevin is our driver now, and he's gonna be our driver in the foreseeable future."
Grubb has been with Brewco Motorsports since 1999. A couple of days after a serious sit-down talk with Wilkerson and team owner Clarence Brewer at Talladega, Grubb finished eighth in the Subway 300, his only top 10 of the year.
"It wasn't an ultimatum," Wilkerson said. "It was, 'This is what we expect out of you,' and 'This is what the sponsors expect out of you. As long as you do these things, then everything's fine.' It had absolutely nothing to do with performance. He's bent over backward to get things done."
That includes Grubb making a bi-weekly trip from his home in Mechanicsville, Va., near Richmond, to the team's shop in Central City, Ky.
Added Grubb: "I told them everything that I thought we needed to do better and win races. They told me things that they wanted me to do to help the team. We were fine after that. They've been working hard to get what I want, and I've been working hard to get what they want."
