Kertus Davis ended the 2007 season with a lot of uncertainty. After starting the year with Kevin Harvick Inc., Davis ended it without a Nationwide Series ride for 2008. So he went to south Florida for several weeks to help his stepfather do electrical work.

"I really didn't know what I was going to do," Davis said. "It's depressing is what it was. I worked my whole life to get here to this stage. I felt like all the air was deflated out of me."

But after Christmas, Davis returned to South Carolina to help his dad work on race cars. Johnny Davis auctioned off several cars and other equipment, but father and son kept five series cars and decided to try to run the whole season

together again.

"It's not a business for us," Kertus Davis said. "We have a passion for racing. We love to race. That's all we know, that's all we've ever done. Not just myself but my whole family: My dad, my dad's dad. That's what we want to do is race."

Kertus drove for his dad for most of his NASCAR career before joining the powerhouse KHI team. Johnny Davis hired Eric McClure for 2007, but that deal has ended.

Kertus Davis said the team has five cars ready for the season, finishing a superspeedway car in time to get in one day of testing at Daytona International Speedway.

"It's been tough, no sponsorship," Davis said. "I just want to race. I feel like I have something to prove all over again. My dad, I feel like, has something to prove. Hopefully, we can accomplish a lot together."
