Competition yellows, mandatory air pressures set for Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS - NASCAR will throw the caution approximately 15 laps and then 40 laps into the Allstate 400 so teams can check tire wear at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NASCAR race director David Hoots announced at the pre-race drivers meeting.

NASCAR also will require a mandatory minimum air pressure of 16 pounds in the left-front tires. For about a year, the sanctioning body has had mandatory right-front air pressures but not for those on the left-front. Goodyear came into the weekend recommending 18 pounds of pressure in the left-fronts but lowered that to 16 for the 160-lap race today on the famed oval.

Teams are wary about the tires following practice sessions Saturday. Points leader Jimmie Johnson was among those who had a tire go down. It is expected that tire wear should get better during the race as more rubber is put down on the track.

A full fuel run at the track is about 34-40 laps. Teams will not be allowed to pit under green for the first 40 laps to keep them from being on the tail end of the lead lap when coming in on the competition cautions, taking tires only and coming out in front of the rest of the field.

"We were in a similar situation last year," said Hendrick Motorsports Vice President of Development Doug Duchardt on Saturday night. "You do have to be careful with your camber and your pressures. It might take a a stop and a half before we get enough rubber [on the track] and we'll be able to go a full fuel run. You have to be careful for sure."
