DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Richard Childress Racing's Clint Bowyer seems excited to be back in his Sprint Cup car, though he admits that testing isn't necessarily the most thrilling prospect for a NASCAR driver.
Before he participated in any drafting practice on the track, the driver who finished third in the points standings last season was asked to sum up what he had learned in the early sessions at Daytona International Speedway. Twenty-five Cup teams have been testing at the track since Monday. They conclude their test Wednesday.
"A lot of asphalt, kind of slow and pretty boring," he said with a laugh. "No, it is what it is. It's all for a good cause, it really is. It is boring."
Of course, things could be worse.
"You hear all the drivers coming down here and complain, but I was sitting there and signing a few autographs and looked over their shoulder and saw this guy out there laying concrete in the infield and I was like, 'Well, it can always be worse. I'll get back in.' It really is all for a good cause when we come down here," Bowyer said.
Bowyer says it's good to be coming into the season after a stellar run in 2007, though, and that the momentum of that performance should carry over. He and crew chief Gil Martin are even closer than in the past, and the two continue to learn about one another while also respecting the decisions each makes.
That, Bowyer says, is a crucial ingredient to success for any team.
And it is one he sees as an asset for not only his group, but all the teams in the RCR organization.
How did he and Martin develop that type of relationship? Bowyer says it all comes down to one thing.
"I think it's kind of like a relationship. You've got to have a lot of trust, you've got to have a lot of trust in each other," he said. "... That chemistry's very important."
With the performance of last season and strengthened level of belief in each other, Bowyer thinks his team can pick up where it left off and contend for the 2008 title.
"I felt like we had a lot of confidence, a lot of momentum built towards the end of last year, and we were able to work on that," he said. "It's comforting knowing we were running good when it was over. We weren't 43rd by any means, so hopefully we can keep that momentum strong and start off here at Daytona doing good."
