DOVER, Del. – Lance McGrew will call the race for Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and make the decisions when to pit and how many tires to put on the car while team manager Brian Whitesell will make the calls on setup adjustments in the Autism Speaks 400, Hendrick competition director Ken Howes said Sunday afternoon at Dover International Speedway.
Whitesell remains the listed crew chief for the race, so if there would be any NASCAR penalties as far as the car or the team, Whitesell would be the one penalized.
“Lance will be the voice and Brian will be making decisions [as well],” team owner Rick Hendrick said.
Hendrick replaced Earnhardt Jr. crew chief Tony Eury Jr. with McGrew, but the change was supposed to be effective next week at Pocono Raceway because Whitesell was involved in the set up of the Earnhardt Jr. car and McGrew was supposed to crew chief for Brad Keselowski. But Keselowski failed to qualify for the race, leaving McGrew available to help Earnhardt Jr.

May 31, 2009 at 3:09 PMHalfway through the race, Junior is running 5th, and looks to be doing really well in communicating with Lance on what the car is doing, and the crew seems to be taking the car in the direction it needs for Junior to be happy. So far looks like a good change for Junior and the whole 88 team!

May 31, 2009 at 5:09 PMI know this is just the first race with Lance McGrew as Earnhardt's new Crew Chief.....but I am luving what I am seeing so far!! Man just to get to see Jr. running up in the top 5 and the top ten was Awesome! What I liked was when Jr. started going backwards, McGrew immediately brought him in and made adjustments on the car instead of Jr. just continuing on going backwards. He then came out around 15th or 16th and finished 12th. I will surely take that! Earnhardt picked up one more spot in the point standings! Great Job for Jr. and the entire #88 team!! We will see from here on out!!! GO Jr. GO!!!!
