Jon Wood said Wednesday morning on “The Morning Drive” on Sirius Satellite Radio that he would not be in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as originally planned. Instead, Johnny Sauter will be behind the wheel for the UAW Dodge 400 Sprint Cup Series race.

Sauter will have to make the race via qualifying since the Wood Brothers were out of the top 35 in 2007 owners points.

“I don’t really know that I want the responsibility of it being a make-or-break situation trying to make that race,” Wood said on the show. “With the car outside the top 35 in owner points and not being guaranteed a starting spot, that’s a pretty big demand to put on somebody.

“I’ve got no seat time whatsoever in the [new] car, and I just, quite frankly, don’t think I’m suited for the job in trying to make that race.
There are a lot of unknowns and a lot of variables to speak of involving me and the Cup car and whatnot. It’s just something that I don’t feel comfortable with.”

Wood said 1988 Cup champion Bill Elliott was going to drive the car at Las Vegas but had previous commitments.

Wood said he was “not scared to qualify the car,” but being that his father is co-owner, he didn’t want to face the possibility of not only “letting down the race team and the car owner, but I’d be letting down my family.”
