What others say about Jimmie Johnson’s fourth consecutive NASCAR Cup title
By SceneDaily Staff
Sunday, November 22, 2009
HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus earned their fourth consecutive NASCAR Cup championship Sunday, a feat unmatched in the 61-year history of the sport. Here’s a look at what some are saying about the accomplishment:
“It takes a special blend of commitment, passion and drive to win consecutive championships, let alone four in any athletic endeavor. Winning four Stanley Cup championships was a testament to the teamwork and camaraderie our four teams had in proving we were a true dynasty. I would like to congratulate Jimmie on accomplishing this very special feat.”
- Mike Bossy, who won four consecutive Stanley Cup championship from 1980-83 with the New York Islanders
“I can’t believe Jimmie did it. It’s unreal. I really just believed that something would happen and Mark [Martin] would be able to get him just because it’s so amazing the luck that they’ve had. I know it’s not all luck, but there’s luck that goes with it and they’ve had amazing performance and amazing luck and my hat’s off to them.”
- Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards
“I remember hanging out with Jimmie in 2001 and sitting on his boat dock, just hanging out and drinking a beer. Both of us were just in awe that we were even in the Busch Series at the time, so for him to do what he has done is incredible. I will say that as much as he wins and everything happens, Jimmie’s one of those guys you want to hate, but he’s one of the best guys out here. I think that he is very deserving of what he has.”
- Roush Fenway Racing driver Jamie McMurray
"Congratulations to Jimmie, Chad, [team owner] Rick [Hendrick], and the entire Hendrick Motorsports organization on winning a fourth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. It has been a solid year for Team Chevy, and we are thrilled to share in the success of all our Chevy drivers, teams and owners. We are very proud of their hard work and for once again demonstrating Chevrolet's commitment to working everyday to win both on and off the track with our outstanding cars and trucks."
- Chevrolet Global Vice President Brent Dewar
"On behalf of all the folks at GM Racing, congratulations to Jimmie, Chad, and everyone on the No. 48 team; along with Rick and the entire Hendrick Motorsports organization on their fourth championship. Winning Chevrolet's 33rd NASCAR Sprint Cup manufacturers' title and our 26th drivers championship is a testament to the excellence of everyone at Team Chevy – the drivers, engineers, teams, and support staff that make it happen.
- GM Racing Manager Mark Kent
“It’s just that they’ve done a phenomenal job. Four in a row for them and I couldn’t be happier for him. There’s no more deserving champion than them.”
- Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin
“I have a great deal of respect for the work they put into it. The thing that interests me is I think sometimes I hear the fans say it's coming easy to him. I suspect they work really hard. I suspect nothing comes that easy to anybody, and I'm sure that Chad [Knaus] and Jimmie and everybody works exceptionally hard. I know that I've had the privilege to work with Mark Martin, and I know if you're going to run as well as he does, you're going to have to work your ass off, and I'm sure that Jimmie does that. … To win four championships in a row, I didn't think anybody would be able to do that. Never in 100 years did I think somebody would be able to do that.”
- Richard Childress Racing driver Jeff Burton

Nov 23, 2009 at 3:06 PMThat's a good point about his dad Gwen. One of the reasons I was turned on to Johnson his Rookie year was that I saw read an article about his parents, they were so down to earth and were regular people. I think his dad drove a cement truck and they really sacrificed and suffered financially to allow Jimmie to race dirt bikes and trucks. They remind me of my parents.

Report as AbuseDon't forget Danica thinks she can race in SprintCup so that should be very interresting to watch how she does. Personaly she should stay where she is at and try to win races and make more finishes in the top five. If she can do that manybe she has a chance in a Cup car.

Because he doesn't care about getting even, but just races? My driver was Dale Jarrett. Because he was a good, clean driver. Like Mark Martin. He raced for the win, without having to take someone out. Jimmy does that. He races. When DJ retired, I had to find a new favorite. Jimmy is everything I look for in a driver. He races for the win, without having to take anyone out on the way. He catches and passes cars. Exactly what racing is all about. And he's a nice guy. He respects the sport. And he isn't a poor looser.

If you don't think so then ask any one of the 42 drivers that have finished behind him four years in a row. I'm not certain but I think in 8 years Jimmy has had four Championships, 1 second finish, and 1 third finish.....Ya, right, the man "can't" drive. I'm sick and tired of all the press given to Hendrick Organization, especially when there are so many other stories out there that need to be told. If Brian France doesn't change things in order to actually make racing more affordable to all teams out there who want to drive, well, he going to lose a lot more fans than he has already lost.

Nov 23, 2009 at 10:34 PMRainier, I have to be honest... I am not a Johnson fan and really wasn't paying attention to the celebration until I heard them say something about Jimmie's Dad. I started watching and I saw how emotional that man was and heard him say that he prayed the car and it parts would stay together and nothing would go wrong. I could tell he was a down to earth good ole boy and wanted his son to make history which he did. My heart went out to him and then I was so happy that Jimmie won for his Dad's sake. If Jimmie had not won, I wouldn't have known Jimmie and his family's story. That man raked and scraped and did what he could to try and make sure Jimmie had a chance one day to do something with his life. I won't ever think of these 4 in a row without thinking of his Dad and how proud and happy his tear filled face looked!

Nov 24, 2009 at 1:30 AMYes, THAT is WHY the whole NA$CAR point system needs to change. Carl won the most races in 2008, NINE to JJ's 8; but they both won 3 in the chase, and JJ wins the chase. . . . . The whole premise of the chase is boring. TOOOOOOOOOOOOO long, and points are all wrong, since the Chaser's have to deal with the non chasers too. Need a point system in the chase that is not affected by the other 31 drivers.

Nov 24, 2009 at 9:41 AMI don't disagree with that JBBIGROD. An F1 style points system for the chasers with whoever finishes 1st getting 12 points with a 5 point bonus if being first out of the chasers wins the race, and so on down the line until whoever comes in last of the chasers gets 1 point. I think Jimmie would still win though, his average chase finish since its inception is first among all drivers. At least in this type of system, 1 win would make up for a wreck or blown engine.

Nov 24, 2009 at 12:27 PMSomething HAS to give to make it more equal and fair. The current point system is totally illogical. They give the Chasers a whole new set of points that the other guys can't catch; but still let whatever the other guys do completely affect the chase. Sure there would be some effect regardless, but it shouldn't be so much for a crash or other DNF on just one race. This should be a game of skill, not luck.

I happen to consider them all equal, but if we're picking and choosing which were harder to attain, that's a valid point to make. I guess the simple fact is there will always be people like you that try to minimize the accomplishments of others.

Nov 25, 2009 at 8:00 AMPEPPER, You gave them due before cutting them down just so you could say that you gave them due. Its a pretty weak and transparent tactic. Do you usually compliment people on something before criticizing them and minimizing what you just complimented them on? Maybe I'll try it on my wife and see how that goes. "Hey you are great, but you'll never match up to the other wives out there. What's wrong? I said you were great." I don't think anyone is buying what you're selling PEPPER. And if that is how you give someone their due, I feel sorry for anyone looking to you for recognition.

Nov 25, 2009 at 10:11 AMRANIER I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. I don't feel 10 race championships are the same as an entire season championship

Nov 25, 2009 at 3:11 PM32 - And especially considering that for at least the first of Petty's championships there was only, I beleive, 1 other driver that ran the full schedule. And lets not forget that when Petty was dominating back in the day, he was the ONLY driver with a major sponsor. All the other guys were putting their own money up and any local business that could spare any $$$$ to help them out. I don't think it was until after Petty's 5th(?) title that he had to compete with more than a handful of drivers running the full schedule. Pretty easy to win the championship when you are only racing against any where from 1 to 5 other guys for it.....and you're the only one with a major sponsor. As far as Petty's 200 wins, no one will ever come close to that, as back in the day they ran 3, 4 and sometimes 5 races per week.
