Travis Kvapil to drive for Robby Gordon at Pocono

LONG POND, Pa. – Travis Kvapil will drive the No. 7 Robby Gordon Motorsports car in Sprint Cup practice Saturday at Pocono Raceway while driver Robby Gordon is competing in the Baja 500 off-road race.

Gordon is expected to arrive at Pocono on Saturday night and compete in the Pocono 500 on Sunday.

Kvapil, whose Yates Racing No. 28 team suspended operations after the race at Bristol in March, was at the track Friday to practice and qualify, but rains likely will keep him off the track until Saturday.

“I’m happy to do it,” Kvapil said. “It’s a good opportunity for me to get back in the seat and make a few laps, hopefully get the car fast for him. It’s good to help competitors out.”

Gordon likely won’t have to start in the rear of the field. If qualifying gets rained out Friday, he should be able to start 34th, where he is in owner points.

Kvapil said he wasn’t told to try to imitate Gordon’s driving style but just to get the car driving well.

“In talking to the crew chief, he said just to give them the information to make the car as comfortable and fast as they can, and hopefully it will be good for Robby,” Kvapil said.

Kvapil has not been in a car since March. He did go to Talladega and was ready to serve as a substitute driver for an ill Sam Hornish, but Hornish never needed him to get in the car.

“It’s exciting to get back out there and make some laps,” Kvapil said. “It’s fun to be back. It has been pretty quiet. We’re obviously still working on [sponsorship] trying to get the [Yates] car out there. Other than that, it has been pretty quiet.”
