The 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season didn't turn out as promising as Reed Sorenson probably would have liked.
Driving the No. 43 Dodge for Richard Petty Motorsports after three seasons at Chip Ganassi Racing, Sorenson struggled considerably and went on to part ways with his team at season's end.
During the summer, Sorenson said that he was informed that the organization did not have funding for four cars, but instead of leaving the team, Sorenson made sacrifices financially and remained on track for the remainder of the season.
The Peachtree City, Ga., native finished 29th in the series standings and earned $4,657,253 in purses.
During the offseason, SceneDaily is taking a look at the top 35 in 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup driver points. Here’s how Sorenson’s season unfolded:
By the numbers: In 36 starts, Sorenson recorded one top-10 finish and finished in the top 35 in the series standings for the fourth consecutive season.
Season highlights: Sorenson kicked off 2009 with a ninth-place finish in the rain-shortened Daytona 500 in February and remained in the top 35 the entire season. His other top finish was 11th at Talladega Superspeedway in April.
Key setbacks: Despite having only two DNFs in 2009, Sorenson and his team led only five laps all year and only came close to finishing in the top 10 one other time, with the 11th-place finish.
Newsworthy moment: Sorenson made headlines in September when team officials announced he would not be returning to the organization in 2010 as Richard Petty Motorsports planned a merger with Yates Racing.
In his words: “I want to thank the Richard Petty Motorsports organization for giving me the chance to race the No. 43 Dodge this year," Sorenson said in a news release. "I did the best I could and tried to represent the number and company in a way that would make Mr. Petty and our sponsors proud. I learned a lot this year. The opportunity to work with people like [team co-owner] Richard Petty and [longtime Petty employee] Dale Inman is something that I’ll never forget."
