LOUDON, N.H. - At Infineon Raceway, Elliott Sadler was robbed of a certain top-five finish when a tire went flat just before the final restart. Sunday, he used pit strategy to get back into that position and finally got the finish he felt he deserved.
Sadler and his Gillett Evernham Motorsports team have been on a steady rise in recent weeks. He finished ninth at Michigan and ran well throughout the road-course race at Infineon before the flat tire forced him to drift back to a finish of 19th. Adding insult to injury, he then crashed just after crossing the finish line of that race.
Sunday, his fortunes fared better in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Lenox Industrial Tools 301 as Sadler's team used pit strategy to get into contention and finished fifth for its first top-five of the season.
That didn't gain Sadler any ground in the standings, though, as he remained 25th. It did give him the best showing among Gillett Evernham cars, though, as Kasey Kahne crashed then returned to finish 30th and Patrick Carpentier finished 31st after starting from the pole position.
“To get a top-five, it makes up for what happened to us at Sonoma because my team definitely deserved a top-five there," Sadler said. "We played the pit-strategy game today … I’m proud of my guys; they didn’t give up. We made the car really bad and got a lap down and then we made some good adjustments, got the 'Lucky dog' and were driving back up through the pack."
