FORT WORTH, Texas – Owner/driver Tony Stewart says he doesn’t foresee his Stewart-Haas Racing organization expanding to include a third NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team in 2010.

Stewart-Haas currently fields the No. 14 Chevrolet for Stewart as well as the No. 39 Chevrolet for teammate Ryan Newman.

“We’re at a point in the season right now where we’re getting close to the Chase [For The Sprint Cup], and we’re focused on that,” Stewart said Tuesday while hosting the second annual Smoke Show fantasy camp at Texas Motor Speedway.

“We would pretty much have to have the decision, the agreements on all that already done. We’d have to have the driver, the sponsor; we’d have to have that done by now to be able for it to be feasible for next year.”

Stewart, who departed Joe Gibbs Racing after 10 years to become part-owner of Stewart-Haas following last season, leads the Cup point standings and has two wins this year. He won Cup championships in 2002 and 2005 while at JGR.

While Stewart has previously said that he would be open to adding a third team in the future, he said Tuesday that expansion wouldn’t come “at the sacrifice of performance.”

“I made Ryan the promise, [crew chiefs] Tony Gibson and Darian [Grubb], Bobby Hutchens [director of competition], everyone … the goal is to be a four-car team one day,” he said.

“But we’re not going to have them just for the sake of having them. We want to make sure we’re running well before we add a third team and have all three running well before we add a fourth.

“The good thing is that I feel like we’re in a position to where we can at least [consider] that now.”

Is this a surprise! Darian has been saying this for 2 months now that they went going to do it unless it was the perfect situation and that the driver had to fit in with Tony and Ryan. They are not going to divide their people up for a third driver. Not happening.

Sounds to me like things are going to move a little slower when Tony is spending his own money. Finally he is becoming a real owner/driver.

I don't think its a matter of Tony spending his own money it's making the right move at the right time. I agree now is not the time, and yes i think it will be Harvick when that happens. He is probably one of the only drivers that would fit with Tony and Ryan.

#7 I agree and it will be Kevin or Kasey. This makes what Red Bull is doing more intriguing. A move to Chevy with HMS equipment would open the door for Brad to move up. Plus Mark Martin may decide to retire this year. Chevy hasn't said a word, which leads me to think they will be with Red Bull next year.

#9, Mark Martin is signed till 2011. Brad isn't signing with any team for just 1 year and then moving back to HMS in a year. It doesn't work that way. Sponsors don't spend millions of dollars to make merchandise for just 1 year. Where ever Brad goes it will be a multi year deal. Kevin might be good friends with Tony and Ryan but he will not at up at SHR.

I tend to think that this may be not only for all the reasons Tony lists, but also because Kevin Harvick and RCR have said Harvick WILL stay at RCR through 2010. I think Tony is waiting for Kevin.

Mark Martin has already said he's racing full-time next year, and he's signed to a partial for 2011. I wouldn't think he can just "decide" to retire if he honors his contractual commitments.

MSP-why do you think Kevin won't ultimately end up at SHR? If he is stuck at RCR til 2010, and Tony might consider a 3rd team come 2011, it seems like a really logical move and good fit for Harvick to move into that spot, wouldn't you agree? I mean, Harvick and Tony are already buddies, and I think the mindsets are similar, too. I mean, you know, there's always contract negotiations, pay considerations, sponsors, all that, but I'm curious as to why you're so certain of it?

Martin can retire at anytime. Contract or no contract. Hendrick would let him out of this contract if Mark said he has had enough. He can't retire and go to another team. If Red Bull goes to Chevy and Hendrick it would allow Brad to stay within the Hendrick umbrella. I never said Brad would sign for 1 year, where did you get that from?

It will either be Kasy Kane or Happy Harvick with SHR in 2011.

Mark has no intentions of retiring before 2011. He just signed the contract 2 months ago. And no he wont break it like you say. Red Bull has nothing to do with HMS as of yet and so far they have said they will stay with Brian and Scott and are not going to 3 cars. I don't know why you keep saying Brad is going to Red Bull when Red bull isn't starting a 3rd team

If Brad was to drive for HMS in 2011 when Mark retires he would have to run a partial year in 2010 for Phoenix racing and then move to HMS full time to run for ROTY in 2011. I don't see Red Bull hiring him anyway. He doesn't fit the program

The biggest reason for Stewart to wait another year is mainly because Harvick still has another year left at RCR.The reason Harvick won't leave early is because of his sponsorship with Shell/Pennzoil.He can bring that sponsor with him when he goes to Stewart-Haas. There is no sense of Harvick burning bridges with Shell, and I guarantee Shell doesn't want to burn any bridges with Childress.Harvick and Shell are contracted through 2010.

I know Mark signed a few months ago, but things can change in a persons life. I'm not saying Red Bull would add a third team, but still no word on Vickers contract. That meeting was held over a week ago and still nothing from Red Bull. Scot Speed is dispensable and there could be a seat open. What program doesn't fit with Brad? I am sure Hendrick can buy out any contract with Phoenix Racing since they are the supplier. In all major sports contracts are bought out and players change teams. Look at Arod, the Yankees let him out of a 25 million contract only to resign him to a 30 million a year contract. Go figure that one out. I don't see Brad waiting a year to go with HMS, he wants the Sprint Cup next year. Is Red Bull waiting to see if Vickers make the chase before they announce his contract? or manufacturer change? I feel they have waited long enough and need to say something soon.

The only way SHR could expand for 2011 is if Kasey still had Bud with him for that year and he would have the sponsorship he needs for the third team. If Kasey chooses to leave Richard Petty Motorsports that is.

Why do you say that KNCHEVY? Why do you think SHR needs Kasey OR Budweiser? Tony can bring in sponsors of his own right, he sure as heck doesn't need baby-face Kahne to do it for him. Further, as has been being discussed, Harvick is open for 2011, and could easily bring Shell with him. Tony doesn't need Kahne and I don't understand why you'd say that's the "only way SHR could expand for 2011." In fact, that statement makes no sense at all. There are a zillion ways SHR could expand for 2011, with or without Kahne.

By the way, I DON'T want Kahne to go to SHR. He doesn't "fit" with SHR, IMO.

SHR can bring in shell with Kevin, and I'm sure Kevin would jump at going to SHR. Brad is signed with JMS for the NW next year, so if he steps up to the Sprint Cup next year which Chevy team does he go to? I really thought SHR was going to add a 3rd car next year and give Brad the job. So many if's....

Well said SARSIE1 on top of that when Budweisers contract is up they will disappear Kasey Kahne does not even fit or perform at the level of SHR they might as well hire Elliott Sadler at the same time.I would not put to much value into most of the garbage a few of these posters anti up its usually already a couple days old.But hey enjoy and Have a nice day.

2010= 1) Addition of Kevin Harvick and sponsor
    Shell-Penzoil in car #41.

    2) Addition of sponsor Bass Pro Shop as a
    co-primary sponsor for the #39.

    3) Tony's #14 Office Depot/Old Spice
    car parked beside the NASCRAP
    Hauler/Office all season at the
