Tony Stewart clarifies harsh comments about Dale Earnhardt Jr. over team radio

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Tony Stewart clarified the critical remarks he made about Dale Earnhardt Jr. over the team radio last week at Phoenix International Raceway, saying it was in the “heat of the moment.”
Stewart, after being caught up in a wreck caused by Earnhardt Jr.’s spin, cursed on the team radio and said, “Dale Jr., that no-talent [expletive].”
The comments received airplay on ESPN’s “NASCAR Now” program and made the rounds on YouTube throughout the week.
Stewart has been known as an ally of Earnhardt Jr.’s, which is why the remarks surprised many fans – especially during a season in which Earnhardt Jr. has struggled.
Saturday, Stewart addressed the comments by saying although he had yet to speak with Earnhardt Jr. about the remarks, “everybody knows we’re in the heat of the moment.”
“It doesn’t matter who it was, I would have said the same thing,” Stewart said. “It was being upset because we’re running for all the points we can get right now and we took a hit in the points last week because of that incident.
“It doesn’t matter who it was – that’s heat of the moment.”
Stewart was relegated to a 25th-place finish as a result of the wreck, his second poor finish in three weeks. The points leader heading into the Chase For The Sprint Cup, Stewart is fifth in points with only Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway remaining.

It was said in the "heat of the moment." Tony hasn't been running as well as he wanted to and he had no idea Jr. had oil on his tires that would spin any driver out. If anything, maybe Tony can understand the disappointments Jr. has had this year of getting caught up in incidents that he had no control over either. It happens.I'm sure these two have said worse to each other when just kidding around. lol Here's hoping for a good run for Tony Sunday in the chase, and for Dale, Jr!! GO JR!!

His success was in the old car, but there's always hope, some other drivers struggled with this COT and now seem to handle it better. And the reason it shocked us fans is because Jr has taken up for Tony all through Tony's outbursts, knocking people around, and his anger management problems. Nov 21, 2009 at 11:11 PMWhat most of you people don't realize, is that being able to listen to an In-Car/Crew Radio is a privlage not a right. There's no reason to jump to conclutions over who said what about anybody. I remember when communication from the crew to the driver on the track was via a chalkboard on pitroad. Be grateful you even get to hear anything. The adrenalin flow in your body when racing is unbelievable and even the best of them say things in the spur of the moment they don't actually mean. You can't tell me that someone out there has never said something in the heat of battle that you didn't mean at one time or another. Grow up people and just enjoy the racing along with the characters involved, it makes it that much more fun.

I too am sick of people who claim we are only his fans because of his last name. I started watching Nascar the very day Sr died in the 2001 Daytona 500, I had no clue who anyone was but I chose Jr, I don't no why, he wound up second that day and the rest is history. Stewart is only doing as well as he is because of Hendrick support and Darian Grubb who he stole from Jr's team; the same Grubb who helped Jr run 2nd in points most of last season before the chase.

Knaus is the best crew chief so switch him and his entire team for next year to the 88 for Jr and give Jimmie Jr's current team for next year. So what if they get some help from family. As for Jr who cares if he is 25th in points. Do you really want to watch a race with the top 12 drivers only. Where did all the excitment go in this sport. Beleive me I love NASCAR and will watch it if my driver wins or not, but if it was not for all 43 drivers each week what kind of racing would we be watching? And as for Jr having "no talent" he would not have won two championships in the Busch series. As for some, he did not have move up to a bigger class of drivers to go back and win a championship in a lower class. That's like a pro football player going back to play in college.

All drivers screw up sometimes and cause a accident or become involved in one. All the drivers must have some talent to be driving in NASCAR. They believe it will pick up ratings and ticket sales as well. Another is "MORE AGGRESSIVE DRIVING" like we saw from Montoya and Tony Stewart. Don't kill the messenger! I am just saying what was said! They never addressed the subject of someone getting hurt or killed which I find kind of strange. Here's to a lot better 2010 NASCAR season!

The reason the media go to the drivers after a wreck is because they know the fans want to know what each driver had to say. That adds some excitement to the sport. Then when they write the article or talk about it on a NASCAR show, they are adding fuel to the fire which is exactly part of the script. Something needs to get fans fired up again and things like this helps to get the job done.Tony saying what he did got the attention of many fans.Some agreed with him and others didn't, but it got the fans attention!!! I've heard people say they miss the old Tony....well he is still lurking about as we have saw in the last two weeks. I never had a problem with what he said, because I knew it not to be true. Like you said, both drivers are over it and are focusing on next year now, just like we need to be doing.
