Former Bill Davis Racing crew chief Tommy Baldwin, who had operated his own team in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2004, plans to field a Sprint Cup team in 2009 under his Tommy Baldwin Racing banner.

The team will run Toyotas with engines from Arrington Manufacturing and plans to run the full season, according to a news release from the team. The team did not announce a driver nor a sponsor.

“With tough economic times upon us, the timing for starting this team is right,” Baldwin said. “Our overhead is low and we have a great group of talented mechanics and specialists to choose from. We can offer sponsors the chance to get into NASCAR Sprint Cup racing at a fraction of the costs, without compromising on-track performance, due to our low overhead.”

Baldwin, 41, is a New York native with roots in Modified racing. He has worked for Evernham Motorsports, Robert Yates Racing, Ultra Motorsports and BDR.

“It’s still attainable to be an owner, if you are willing to put the work in and I’m no stranger to hard work,” Baldwin said.

Give it up, Tommy. Your team did nothing before and you're walking into a bottomless pit requiring $100 million per year.

Good luck, Tommy: You sure can look at people like Robby Gordon as an example of a small team that can run well. Good luck to you.

I am not sure why he wants to get into Cup racing now. There's a month until the season begins, and he's just now planning to race? I think it will be tough for his team to do much at the start, especially if they don't have a sponsor. I think that this will be a good way to see if it's possible for a team to survive without a fulltime sponsor.

Good luck to him! I guess If he can cover his costs it probably will easier to make the field this year than the past couple with so many cars folding.

Glad to see to him take the chance. Maybe this will show others that you can race stock cars on a low budget. I wish him and his team the best!!

I hope he does real well. Its great to see someone like him who is not afraid to take on a 1 driver team. Guys like Tommy are what started the sport and a guy like Robby Gordon and what has kept it going. You take out the big 4 owners and you have nothing. Now you have Robby, Tommy and the greatest Stewart/Hass racing. I hope they show that the smaller guy can get it done. The top 4 have made it to hard for the little guy to make it in cup and that ashame. Micheal Daly what you said was so wrong. You should like the kind of guy that kicks people when they are down. At least keep an open mind if you have one.

He must have a fat sponsor signed up. Wonder who's driving? Elliot Sadler? Bobby Labonte?

"Greatest Stewart/Haas (learn to spell it Pat) racing??????????They haven't even hit the race track yet and you call them Greatest. You really need to learn the sport.

Hope Tommy does well but if there was a Vegas line on this I'd have to bet against him. Of course he might have one of those "money trees" planted out behind his shop.

I think having either Sadler or LaBonte would be a good catch for a driver. Especially if Elliott is bringing a sponsor with him. Good luck - glad to see an individual try to get into a series so filled with megateams.

Most of you have lamented here, and in other posts about how NASCAR is dying and some of you have said that there will probably be less than 43 cars starting many races this year...Tommy Baldwin is trying to start a new team...give the guy a break...and a few races before you come down on him...It is him, and others like him, who will help keep pushing this sport on

Oh no! Another Toyota owner! I hope Sadler or LaBonte don't consider crawling into one!.

The times are right. . . low overhead. . . . This is an interesting new perspective. Hope it works for him.

Good luck Tommy Baldwin!!! With NASCAR in trouble, everyone should pull for the little teams to be successful. Or soo we'll have Cup races with 20 drivers from 4 different teams.

Doesn't seem like the right time to get started in Nascar.Bigger teams are struggling to get sponsor money. Was there an unreported MegaMillions winner somewhere by the name of Baldwin.Good luck to you, you'll need it,somehow I don't see this team being around at the end of the year.

I can tell you one thing and that is someone is behind him with some money and with the COT you dont have to really prepare for Daytona anyway. You can buy a Plate COT right now because of all the mergers and teams splitting up. As of yesterday there are only 37 cars for the 500.
