HAMPTON, Ga. – If there is any lingering animosity between Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray, neither driver was showing it Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Montoya was outraged with his new teammate last Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where McMurray’s car got loose and got into Montoya. Both drivers finished the race several laps down and took hits in the points race. McMurray fell from fourth to 14th in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series point standings while Montoya dropped three spots, from 23rd to 26th.
“He sent me a text saying, ‘Lalalalala he was sorry,’ and the whole thing and I said, ‘Don’t worry about it,’” Montoya said Friday. “He asked me if I wanted him to call me, and I said, ‘Don’t worry about it. It happens. It’s racing.’
“I was really [angry] at the time because we had a DNF the week before with an engine problem and the next week I get taken out by a teammate, something you don’t really expect but it happens.”
McMurray, who won the Daytona 500 to open the season, said he wasn’t concerned about any ill feelings. Montoya had said Sunday that McMurray was trying to prove himself as a driver.
“It’s just all good,” McMurray said.
