TNT’s ratings for Chicagoland Cup race down 6.2 percent

TNT reports that its coverage of last Saturday night’s LifeLock.com 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway drew a 3.0 rating from Nielsen Media Research, 6.2 percent lower than the 3.2 rating it earned for the race last year.

Although previously reported that it was down 18.9 percent, that was comparing the national rating to last year’s cable rating. This year’s cable rating was 3.5, down from a 3.7.

The Chicagoland race was the final one of the six races for TNT this season. ESPN will pick up the Sprint Cup coverage beginning with the Allstate 400 from Indianapolis Motor Speedway next week.

Duh. UFC was trumpetting out its biggest pay-per-view ever on the same night. I'm sure that cut a large swath into NASCAR's telecast.

A year ago, I wrote NASCAR and asked how I could go to a race and do two things: I don't want to sit anywhere near fans who are drinking alcohol (they smell bad), and I do not want to have to stand up to see. They blew me off. Looking at pictures of the stands these days, empty seats coincide with lower TV ratings. Maybe they should provide consideration for fans who do not want to behave like an idiot.

This is scary stuff. Who is working on this from a marketing standpoint? It's such a great sport I hate to see lose TV coverage. It's future may on the Speed Channel or something similar.

I didn't know there was a race last week. Do they still just make left hand turns?

For some reason, TNT started using the crappy 55/45 race/advertisement ratio that made the hated, at least by me, ESPN and Fox coverage. The previous TNT covered race at New Hampshire, showed the commercials alongside the race coverage in a side-by-side window and rarely left the track. Even tho I hate all the commercials not just because they take the viewer away from the action on the track, but it also lessens the marketability of all the teams regardless of the series. It seems the issue of teams loosing sponsors when the commercials are increased hasn't dawned on many fans yet. If the fans would just ban together much like they did years ago to send sponsors a clear message of their support for sponsors on the cars and another message of the viewer's distaste over the continuous race distracting on-air ads, we might all benefit. Yet the new fans are so fickled and erratic that any message would get unfortunately misread by the advertisers.Sadly the days of great race coverage with few on-air commercials will never return. Also gone it seems is the fan loyalty to the products that use to fuel the sport. Now with the ridiculous cost to run a competitive team, it makes more economical sense to produce those hated commercials that can be used elsewhere. So, what do we need to get the great coverage again? How about a fan revolt against the race coverage commercial producers?
