TNT's 2008 ratings match those from last year

Final Nielsen Media Research numbers show that TNT's coverage of six NASCAR Sprint Cup races this season matched its ratings from 2007 with one big gain and one big loss, Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Daily reports.

The network averaged a 4.2 coverage area rating and 5.7 million viewers for the six events, the Daily reports. Its first race this year, the Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway, earned a 4.6 coverage rating, up 27.8 percent from last year, but it was the only TNT event to see a ratings increase. The Daily reports that three of the next five races declined from '07.

Coverage of Saturday night's LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, which moved from a Sunday afternoon race last year, saw ratings drop 22.9 percent and viewership fall 19.4 percent. Direct comparisons are somewhat skewed because Saturday night events typically draw smaller audiences.

The race-by-race ratings: June 8 Pocono 500 at Pocono, 4.6, up 27.8 percent; June 15 LifeLock 400 at Michigan, 3.9, even; June 22 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, 4.3, down 8.5 percent; Lenox Industrial Tools 300 at New Hampshire, 4.0, down 2.4 percent; Coke Zero 400 at Daytona, 4.5, even; and LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland, 3.7, down 22.9 percent.

According to Dirty Worm, TNT is the worst broadcaster of NASCAR. Lets see what he has to say about this article after all the ranting and raving he has done in the past few weeks of TNT's coverage of the races.

Speak of the devil....and he shall appear.... Thank you for the intro 'Anonymous'. Now, let me just share a quick story with you that just about sums up the scumbags over at TNT for me. After being proactive and sending some e-mails to TNT to voice my opinion that they have crossed the line with commercial intrusions in the broadcast, I actually just got a response back today. That's great right?? But...it was just a bland computer-generated form-letter thanking me for my comments. BUT THAT'S NOT EVEN THE BAD PART!!!! They actually had the NERVE to include ADVERTISEMENTS for their upcoming TV shows ALL OVER the bottom of the e-mail!!!!!!! Sadly, the biggest tragedy is that there are so many of you out there that are fine with this behavior. I just don't get it. And if that makes me the lunatic, then I'm PROUD of it.

I loved TNT's broadcasting this year. At least they try to get the most coverage of the race w/o commerical interruptions. I love the idea of the split screen so they can get the commercial in and still watch the race. We all hate commericals but it is what helps keep sponsorship on the cars. After all without the sponsors there would be no races to watch.

Ms. Bedwell..... With all due respect, you AND MANY OTHERS misunderstand what is going on. Yes, race teams depend on their sponsors for funding, BUT that has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the broadcast. The networks decide how many commercial interuptions to include by carefully measureing what the people watching will TOLERATE! If we don't watch, then they can't sell comercial slots! You have been lied to by TNT! I could go on and on, but to SIMPLIFY... Networks will always compete for race coverage no matter what the profit potential. That is where the viewer comes in! You are in CONTROL. Please realize that you have been lulled into accepting this type of behavior! AND if you don't believe me, then just turn on ANY OTHER BROADCAST OF ANY OTHER SPORT and tell me if the interuptions even come close!!!!
