INDIANAPOLIS - David Stremme, currently a test driver at Penske Racing and Nationwide Series driver for Rusty Wallace Racing, said he has talked with Penske officials about driving the No. 12 Sprint Cup car next season.

The team is looking for a replacement for Ryan Newman, who will leave the team at the end of the year, likely for Stewart-Haas Racing.

“We’ve talked,” Stremme said Saturday at O’Reilly Raceway Park. “Obviously, I’m doing testing for them. But there are a lot of opportunities open, too.

“Who wouldn’t want to be racing for Roger Penske? He’s very successful in motorsports. I like how they do their program.”

The 31-year-old Stremme, who drove for two Cup seasons at Chip Ganassi Racing, is ninth in the Nationwide Series standings despite missing one race when the team used Max Papis on the road course at Mexico City.

“I just want to run good, and I want to be around people that want to race and perform,” Stremme said. “I can get right back in there and be competitive. I’m in the cars about every week testing.

“It’d be cool to get to drive for him - or another organization. But it’d be neat really for him because his reputation in motorsports and the success he’s had.”
