JOLIET, Ill. – Tony Stewart ended a string of disappointing performances with his fifth-place finish in Saturday night’s LifeLock.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. That run helped move him further from the contenders trying to break into the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver, whose mishaps near the end of several recent races had afforded him just two top-10 finishes in seven previous outings, steered clear of trouble this time to move from 12th to 10th in the series standings.
“We weren’t bad. We just got in a situation where we got free the last couple runs and that’s when we needed to be really good, and we just fought loose for some reason,” said Stewart, who announced earlier in the weekend that he is leaving JGR next season to became an owner/driver with the team now known as Haas CNC Racing. “So, we never did get the car tight enough on entry and exit. We got it too tight in the center at the end. We were just a little bit off. We were close though.”
Stewart led 11 laps and spent 70 laps running secong behind teammate Kyle Busch before fading down the stretch as his car’s handling deteriorated.
After falling all the way to seventh, Stewart passed Roush Fenway Racing’s Matt Kenseth and Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers following a restart with two laps left to secure his finish.
“We made up some ground at the end, but we shouldn’t have given it up in the first place,” Stewart said. “We were just too loose – couldn’t get tight enough in and off [the corners] to be were we needed to be.”
