Sprint Cup qualifying rained out at Daytona; Tony Stewart on pole

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying for the Coke Zero 400 was rained out Friday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway, putting Stewart-Haas Racing’s Tony Stewart on the pole for Saturday night’s race.

Rain hit the Daytona area around 3:30 p.m. EDT, with Nationwide Series qualifying interrupted with two cars left to make attempts. NASCAR then canceled Cup qualifying at 5:15 p.m. but was trying to get Nationwide qualifying completed.

Joining Stewart on the front row for Saturday’s race is Hendrick Motorsports’ Jeff Gordon. Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick) starts third, with Kurt Busch (Penske Racing) fourth and Carl Edwards (Roush Fenway Racing) fifth, as the field was set according to the NASCAR rule book.

Sixth through 10th will be Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing), Ryan Newman (Stewart-Haas), Kyle Busch (JGR), Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway) and Matt Kenseth (Roush Fenway).

Friday’s rainout marks the fourth time weather has canceled qualifying in 2009. It was also washed out last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The two drivers who failed to make the race were Max Papis (Germain Racing) and Mike Wallace (Gunselman Motorsports).

Larry Gunselman and Tony Raines would make the race in case of a rainout!

Gunselman pulls out and gives starting spot to Furniture Row Sofa Companies for 2nd week in a row due to the heavy dollars being transacted. Gunselman's 5th official Withdraw of the season, who knows how many times the driver had let off the gas and slowed down a Qualifying run though.

It's not really surprising to see a team pull out for another one that needs the exposure, for a good bit of money.

Furniture Row Racing gets Hendrick cars and engines. I wouldn't be surprised if Hendrick has ponied up the cash this week, so that he'd have another car in the field with his parts.

The pole doesn'tmean that much at Daytona But Sm0okes up in front of the crazys. A lot better chance to miss the big one. That first 10 cars is packing some punches. Nascar should give some thought to starting all plate races this way if they wont take them off the cars on the super speedways and get rid of the lukey dog. Put the racing back in Nascar!!! Make them chase you all the way to the checkerd SmOoke. The Best Race Car Driver Ever!!!!!
