Saturday night's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway featured a shakeup among several drivers hunting for spots in the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Roush Fenway Racing's Matt Kenseth, who entered the race in 13th in the series standings, got the best end of the deal. Kenseth's third-place finish vaulted the 2003 series champion four positions to ninth in the standings.
Just 34 points now separate eighth-place Kasey Kahne and 13th-place Kevin Harvick. Harvick entered the race clinging to the 12th and final Chase spot and left two points outside of 12th.
That spot is now occupied by Joe Gibbs Racing's Tony Stewart, who dropped three positions from ninth. Stewart started Saturday night's race before handing over the wheel to relief driver J.J. Yeley because of flu-like symptoms. Per NASCAR rules, the driver who starts a race is awarded all the points for that race, so Stewart collected the points that came with Yeley's 20th-place finish.
Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle also lost three positions and is now 11th in the standings after a midrace accident with Chip Ganassi Racing's Juan Pablo Montoya that left Biffle with a 43rd-place finish.
Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Martin Truex Jr. remained 14th in the standings but is likely to fall this week depending on the severity of an impending penalty from NASCAR because his car failed a prequalifying inspection at Daytona on Thursday.
Roush Fenway Racing's David Ragan, who gained two spots at Daytona, will likely move into 14th with the Truex penalty. Ragan is now 15th, just 14 points behind Truex.
Other changes in the top 12 saw Hendrick Motorsports' Dale Earnhardt Jr. taking second from Richard Childress Racing's Jeff Burton, Kahne jumping two spots to eighth and RCR's Clint Bowyer moving up a spot to 10th.
Eight races remain before the Chase gets under way at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sept. 14.
| 1 | Jimmie Johnson | 6248 |
| 2 | Mark Martin | -184 |
| 3 | Jeff Gordon | -192 |
| 4 | Juan Pablo Montoya | -239 |
| 5 | Tony Stewart | -279 |
| 6 | Kurt Busch | -312 |
| 7 | Greg Biffle | -340 |
| 8 | Ryan Newman | -402 |
| 9 | Kasey Kahne | -414 |
| 10 | Carl Edwards | -437 |
| 11 | Denny Hamlin | -448 |
| 12 | Brian Vickers | -556 |

Jul 7, 2008 at 3:27 PMI hope after Tony got out of the car and went back to the trailer that he had time to turn on the TNT broadcast to witness first hand what a despicable, horrendous, frustrating, insulting, MESS that broadcast was..... AND I hope he comes out swinging! Where is the outrage from this??? Kyle Petty is a good man, but he owes racing fans an APOLOGY for helping facilitate the biggest PERVERSION in the history of sports!!!! Not in racing history... SPORTS history!!! At DAYTONA no less!! This would not happen in another sport! And what does that say about TNT's opinion of race fans??? Go to www.tnt.tv and let them know if you agree!

Jul 7, 2008 at 4:12 PMTNT somehow also has the microfones in the wrong place, I hear the cars and have to turn the TV way too loud to hear what the announcers are saying and that is real upsetting, that was not so with the first half of broadcasting. I must have missed the opinion of race fans as I can't hardly hear any of it, wife makes me turn it down.

Jul 7, 2008 at 6:42 PMHuh? WD WTH you talking about and what has it got to do with the price of eggs?
Report as AbuseTony, you did the right thing getting out or your car and putting Yeley in. Your health and the safety of other drivers should come first.
But since you brought up; Kyle does a great job in broadcasting the race. I would have to see another race setup like this one to see exactly what the complaint is, I just didn't notice it being that bad.

Jul 7, 2008 at 10:27 PMDarrell Waltrip must be Worm Dirt and possibly the only person that didn't like this race. I am glad that Fox has finished for the year. The TNT bunch does a better job and has fewer commericals. I hope they never put Darrell back on TV again.I don't care for either of the Busch's but the Daytona race was a very good race and both Busch's finished very well.I agree that Tony did the right thing by getting out of the car. J.J. did a good job until he got caught up in a wreck.

Jul 8, 2008 at 3:12 AMFolks... Did we watch the same race???LISTEN.... many of you are skeptical about this because I happen to be the messenger. I get it. SO...... PLEASE use the "Google" search function and do a little research and see if I am the ONLY ONE upset by what TNT did during the middle of the broadcast. Commercial breaks.. then announcers reading product statements... with the race muted and commercials in pop-up boxes on half the screen and then Kyle Petty obliviously making goofy jokes about the commercials, ETC ETC ETC The guy above that says he "watched 90%" of the rae is a LIAR, because they only showed maybe 30% of it!!!!!! I read that TNT's phone lines went out and their e-mail crashed during the race with all the people complaining!!!! Hopefully, these people taking a stand can make a difference because after seeing what i saw and now reading the above comments, i fear that this sport may be SCREWED!

Jul 8, 2008 at 12:35 PMGrover.... I've obviously wasted yours and others time. If the way that TNT broadcasted the race on Saturday night is REALLY what race fans want, and it becomes the norm.... then I PROMISE YOU that I will "find another sport" and leave Nascar behind. In fact, in a strange way I'm not even mad at the networks anymore. The real TRAGEDY is the APATHY of a frighteningly large number of race fans who allow their sport to be hijacked by this type of thing. What TNT did Saturday night would never be attempted in ANY other sport because THEIR FANS would not tolerate it. Race fans have no one to blame but themselves. Good luck...
