DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.Chip Ganassi Racing’s Reed Sorenson fulfilled the promise he’d shown all week at Daytona International Speedway, finishing fifth in the Daytona 500.

The 22-year-old was fast in practices throughout Speedweeks and finished fifth in the non-points Budweiser Shootout. He entered Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race on a wave of momentum, but with little fanfare.

He left it with a fifth-place finish and five laps at the front.

“The first half of the race was so hot and slick,” Sorenson said. “You could see everyone out here separating. We took the conservative side on tires. We just tried to keep an eye on the leaders – if we could still see them we were happy. We knew there were going to be cautions at the end. We just took care of the tires, took care of the car and went after it there at the end.”

Then things got a little better.

At the end of the race, Sorenson was in the midst of a group slashing and battling to get to the front. He held his own and finished
fifth, by far his best performance at Daytona.

“It was pretty fun there at the end,” Sorenson said. “We had a lot more grip there at the end. We got two- or three-wide and pushed each other really hard, and there happened to be about four Dodges lines up at the end. Everybody on the team has done a great job since we got here and I think that says a lot about what we can do this year.”
