LOUDON, N.H. - A week after watching someone else drive his car, Reed Sorenson earned his second top-10 finish of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Certainly he benefited from pit strategy, but he left New Hampshire Motor Speedway with a sixth-place finish in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301.
Sorenson stayed out during the final pit sequence, setting up his top finish. Drivers had barely raced at all when a caution came out for a crash, then rain fell on the track. NASCAR later halted the race 17 laps shy of the full distance.
Sorenson said that even the threat of the pending rain had helped his Chip Ganassi Racing team.
"Once the clouds came in, the car reacted positive and really started to run good," he said. "We just didn’t have a good car in the sun. We have to figure out how to make it better. But overall, it was good for us in the points standings, and we’ll take a top-10 finish.”
Crew chief Donnie Wingo said that the team chased the setup on the car all day long.
So deciding to stay out when the rain threatened was an easy call.
"We were close [on fuel], so we decided, what the heck, the rain was close so we decided to stay out and see what happened," Wingo said. "We needed a day like this, not just for this team, but the whole organization. Practice was really good. We’re still lacking a little bit. Hopefully, we’ve made some gains on it this week.”
Sorenson gained three spots to 31st in the driver standings with the performance. He sat out the Infineon Raceway event the previous week as the team opted to put road-course specialist Scott Pruett in the car. Chip Ganassi's Juan Pablo Montoya is 20th in the standings and Dario Franchitti is 41st after missing five races with a broken ankle.
