Mike Smith will be the interim crew chief for Wood Brothers Racing and driver Bill Elliott again this weekend for the Samsung 500 Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Smith debuted in the role last weekend, and he is optimistic about the car the team is bringing for Elliott, who has 11 starts at Texas with
one pole position and one top-10.
“We went to Ford [Racing] this week to work on the seven-post shaker rig with the actual Texas race car," Smith said in a team release. "We think we came up with something really good.”
The Wood Brothers are outside the top 35 in owner points, but Elliott is the only driver outside the top 35 who is a past series champion and therefore has access to a provisional should he fail to make the race on speed. Last weekend at Martinsville, he easily qualified with the 17th-fastest time.
This will be the first race of the season in which Motorcraft is the primary sponsor for the team.
