HAMPTON, Ga. – The big surprise in qualifying Friday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway? Well, Mike Skinner qualifying well might not be a surprise, but his getting the No. 84 Red Bull Racing team into the Kobalt Tools 500 on Sunday could have been.
The Red Bull team had yet to make a race this year with AJ Allmendinger behind the wheel, while teammate Brian Vickers has now made all four events. Skinner is replacing Allmendinger on a temporary basis.
“You’re always disappointed when you think you can do better,” said Skinner, who will start 34th. “Our first goal was to get the car in the race. They struggled to make races. We got the first goal accomplished, and now it’s just a matter of getting better and giving them the proper feedback so they can get better.”
Of the drivers who had to qualify on speed, Skinner was sixth. Vickers took the final spot as seventh on that list. BAM Racing’s Ken Schrader was 0.046 seconds slower than Skinner and didn’t make the race.
Skinner said he pushed it on his second lap.
“You have to somewhat be conservative,” Skinner said. “They didn’t say anything on the radio in the first lap and banzai’d it on the second lap and about wrecked it. “
