DARLINGTON, S.C. – Scott Speed will drive Nemco Motorsports' No. 87 car tonight in the Southern 500, a Red Bull Racing spokeswoman confirmed Saturday afternoon.
Speed failed to qualify his No. 82 car for the Sprint Cup race on Friday at Darlington after crashing in practice and going to a backup car.
Red Bull worked out an arrangement with Nemco to have Speed replace driver Joe Nemechek.
Speed already seemed to rebound well from not qualifying for the Sprint Cup race, as he finished 13th in the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 Nationwide Series race Friday night at Darlington. Speed is driving a part-time schedule for Michael Waltrip Racing in that series.
By putting Speed in the car, which will keep its regular logos, Red Bull will get the rookie valuable experience and Speed will earn the driver points. Team owner Joe Nemechek will get to keep the owners points.
Depending on the financial arrangement, Nemechek also likely got some money for his unsponsored team to continue to go to races.

May 9, 2009 at 3:37 PMWhat a laugh. He crashes out Lagasse trying to go three wide at Darlington (At Darlington!) and crashes his primary cup car, then fails to make the show with the back up car.
So he goes and writes a check for a ride with an under funded team needing money.
The guy is a joke and embarresment to the sport...
Hopefully, the cup guys will show him the light tonight.(It might make for some interesting TV!)
I'm just sayin...

You're right,Scotty is a joke.Whats the point in buying the 87's spot in the race?Red Bull already has representation in the race on Vickers car.

May 9, 2009 at 4:36 PMThat has to really make Nemechek mad since Scott was the reason he had a DNF last night along with a wrecked NW car.
Must have been a big check.

May 9, 2009 at 6:57 PMJoe Nemechek didn't even have the money for fuel for the whole race, much less the tires or anything else. Now his team will likely have the funds to go the whole race (provided that wreck wasn't too bad) and possibly future races.
Red Bull is high on Scott Speed, and if a Toyota team that's in need of money makes the race and Speed doesn't, I wouldn't be surprised to see Speed replace the regular driver. Money might speak in NASCAR, but Nemechek also wants his team to be able to finish races. He wants to race, yes, but if stepping out of the car for a race means his team can run more races, he will jump at that chance.
