TALLADEGA, Ala. – Ken Schrader said he will return to the No. 70 Haas CNC Racing car later this year but former Haas CNC Racing driver Johnny Sauter will drive for the team next week at Richmond International Raceway, Schrader said after posting the third-quickest Sprint Cup qualifying speed Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.
The team released Jeremy Mayfield after the Texas race earlier this month, and used Sauter (who had driven for the team in 2007) at Phoenix International Raceway two weeks ago. The team then tapped Schrader for the Talladega event.
“We definitely are going to run some more – we’re working on a schedule,” the 52-year-old Schrader said. “I know that [Johnny] Sauter is
going to run it next week and we’re working on that stuff now. That’s the only real good advantage I found of being old so far, I told them to let me know if I need to be there.”
Schrader had been driving for BAM Racing this year but that team is taking a sabbatical until funding materializes.
“I’ve driven for those people for two full years and then drove one race last year and started off the year this year [with them],” Schrader
said. “They love this sport a lot. They’ve invested a lot of their own money in that team, and I know they’re working hard to get funding to run it.
“I’ll always be indebted to them because I worked for them for a while and they’re just good people who love the sport. But I don’t have any [contractual] ties to them.”
