Elliott Sadler and his Gillett Evernham Motorsports team are coming off their second top-10 finish of the season, perhaps giving them some momentum entering this weekend’s Best Buy 400 at Dover International Speedway.
That’s good timing for the team that carries the same sponsorship as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
Sadler will carry a special Autism Speaks paint scheme as well and will sign the car’s hood, which will be donated for a charity auction to benefit the group. Bidders can visit www.sadlerfoundation.org once the race begins for the auction that will continue until June 19.
Sadler admits that his team needed its eighth-place run, which came in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
“We needed that top-10 in so many ways,” he said. “After what happened at Darlington, and even the [Sprint] Showdown, everyone on this No. 19 team wanted to show what we could do when given the chance to race.”
Sadler was caught up in early crashes in both of those races. He had fallen to 28th in the driver standings, though he’s climbed back to 25th after last week’s performance.
He says that he was frustrated to be caught up in the accidents, but he’s comfortable entering Dover this weekend since he ran well in the last outing.
“We can walk into Dover with our heads held high and feel good about what we did last week at Lowe’s,” he said. “We stayed in the game, and [team director] Rodney [Childers] and the pit crew did a good job on their end. It was the complete deal and gave us a top-10 finish. And with Best Buy sponsoring the race itself this weekend, we really want to have a great performance for them.
“I like Dover; I’ve led a few races there and enjoy the high-banked action on the concrete. You absolutely have to go for track position there because if you get caught up in some of the stuff that goes on in the back of the pack, your day is done in an instant.”
