After making an early exit from last Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Dover International Speedway, Elliott Sadler seems to be a decent bet to make it to the finish line in Sunday's Pocono 500 at Pocono Raceway, if history is any guide.
The Gillett Evernham Motorsports driver's 18 Pocono starts without a DNF are a series record at the 2.5-mile Pennsylvania track. But Sadler doesn't take all the credit.
“That’s a pretty big accomplishment at a track that is so demanding on motors and cars," he said. "The engine department works overtime for a track like Pocono, and I know they used that recent test to get ours even better for this weekend.”
Sadler needs to do more than finish on Sunday, however. He needs to finish well. Over the season's first 13 races, the Emporia, Va., native has scored just two top-10 finishes and is 28th in the series standings.
Dover didn't do much to help Sadler rebound as he crashed from contact with Yates Racing's David Gilliland on lap 19, setting off a chain reaction accident that collected 10 cars.
But Pocono, where Sadler and the other Cup teams participated in a two-day test session with NASCAR's new generation car for two days last week, could help Sadler get on track. He was pleased with the progress that he and teammate Kasey Kahne made during the test.
“At first, we weren’t too sure what was going on there last week," said Sadler, who has a best Pocono starting position of third and a best finishing position of ninth. "Kasey and I looked at each other and just shook our heads the early part of the first day. Then, when we got back out there later, we were running much better and were both a lot happier with our results.
"That’s typical of this Gillett Evernham Motorsports team in how they are able to take and share information to improve our cars very quickly."
