NASCAR says bump-drafting rules not to blame for single-file Talladega racing
TALLADEGA, Ala. - Stewart-Haas Racing's Ryan Newman was sore after a frightening, end-over-end crash that sent his car flipping, rolling and skidding down the track at Talladega Superspeedway in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Amp Energy 500.
He was just as sore at NASCAR officials.
It was just six months ago when Newman tapped Carl Edwards’ spinning car, launching it into the air and into the catch fence at Talladega.
“I’m just really disappointed,” Newman said. “We had this race back here in the spring and complained about cars getting airborne and now ironically I’m the guy that gets upside down. … I wish NASCAR would do something.”
NASCAR did do something to try to keep cars on the ground. It decreased the size of the holes in the restrictor plates from 60/64ths of an inch to 59/64ths of an inch. It also prohibited bump-drafting in the turns.
But two cars – Newman’s and Mark Martin’s – ended up getting airborne in a race that was fairly tame for the first 100 laps before drivers began racing two and three wide. Newman’s accident occurred when he got tapped by Marcos Ambrose as cars slowed in the draft.
“It was a boring race for the fans,” Newman said. “That [wreck] is not something anybody wants to see, at least I hope not. If they do, go home because you don’t belong here.
“It’s just a product of this racing and what NASCAR has put us into with this box and these restrictor plates with these types of cars – with the [no passing below the] yellow line, no bump-drafting, no passing. Drivers used to be able to respect each other and race around each other. Richard Petty, David Pearson and Bobby Allison and all those guys have always done that. I guess they don’t think much of us any more.”
That’s not true, NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said.
“Drivers are fortunate that they can take the spills that they do and you can talk to them 15-20 minutes after they climb out of the car,” Pemberton said. “And like anything, we’ll get together and we’ll talk about it.
“It’s racing, and a lot of times you can’t prepare for every situation like that. … We try to work with the teams and the drivers in here. We respect what they say and what they have to offer, and if it’s something we feel we have to work on, we work on it.”
Although Newman was uninjured, it took workers more than five minutes to flip the car back over and cut off the roof so he could climb out.
“We don’t need the cars getting upside down like this,” Newman said. “This is ridiculous. There is way more technology than that to help us out. Whether it is a speed issue, a roof-flap issue, whatever. I said it myself in the media center after the spring race here, and now to be the guy standing here trying to live it all out again, I’m just happy I am living it out.
“It is a shame that not more is getting done. I don’t know. I guess maybe I expect NASCAR to call me. I am the only guy out there with an engineering degree. I would like to have a little respect on my end.”
Pemberton said the race was typical of Talladega – periods of single-file racing following by a spectacular crash in which cars occasionally get airborne. He said Newman’s accident would be analyzed.
“We’ll go back and look at the numbers and see if there is anything that needs to be done,” Pemberton said. “We’ll go back and we’ll evaluate what happened today.”
Not everyone involved in the Newman wreck thought the racing was ridiculous.
“Everybody was pretty calm up until that point,” Harvick said. “It looked like somebody just hooked the 39 [of Newman], but other than that I thought it was a pretty calm Talladega. Obviously we had some crashes there at the very end. … I don’t think the restrictor plate had anything to do with it.”
The hood of Harvick’s car was damaged, but he was able to finish the race despite getting an up-close look at the inside of Newman’s car when it landed upside down on his hood.
“It’s kind of how our year has gone,” Harvick said. “If there was one car he was going to land on top of, it was probably going to be us.”
Martin, a longtime critic of restrictor-plate racing, agreed that the crashes were typical of Talladega and not the product of the rules.
“They didn’t create that [Newman] wreck that brought the caution out that made a green-white-checkered [finish]; that was just a sense of urgency time,” Martin said. “That’s what we had here. They haven’t created that, that’s what it is.
“People were trying to make it to the end. They got pretty close.”
And some got upside down. Newman left frustrated, Martin maybe not so much.
“It’s a success if I walk out of here,” Martin said. “I’ve had a successful day. I climb on that plane, I go home, I see my family, it’s all good.”

Nov 1, 2009 at 5:24 PMEnd of that race was totally ridiculous. Change rules and let them race or just make it a 10 lap race because no one is racing until then the way it is now. NASCAR reacted to the spring wreck by putting the hammer down on bump drafting in the corners. That's not even what caused that wreck. That was the yellow line and blocking. Come on NASCAR! Todays event was NOT racing.

Was even more relieved when they showed him coming out of the car, after a lengthy time of getting him out. I felt really bad for Krissie, that had to be really agonizing and painful for her. As for the single file racing....I think that was the driver's way of boycotting this new rule that nascar put in place an hour before the race. And I still saw them bump drafting in the turns. I remember when they first brought the cot to Daytona and Talladega, was lots of single file racing, or a parade of race cars.

Nov 2, 2009 at 4:22 PMJust an amazing race NASCAR. You feared a car getting airborne and hurting fans, so you raised the fence, told the drivers not to bump-draft in the corners, and instead you had 2 (not 1, but 2!) cars get airborne and flip.
Report as AbuseIt's funny too, that both of the cars that flipped today were Hendrick cars (whether in the HMS shop or a satellite). If NASCAR was trying to help Jimmie Johnson with the new rules, all they did was cause two of his teammates to flip.

Nov 2, 2009 at 4:43 PMThe car may...may be safer, but with all the restrictions and rules, the racing isn't even racing any more. 36 cars lined up one after the other isn't racing. It's a parade. No matter how fast they may be going. It's SUPPOSED to be the car behind pushing the car ahead. Bump drafting doesn't cause nearly as many accidents as the blocking does. Just leave them alone and let them race. Ryan had that right. They should listen to what he has to say. The car itself is not right for racing. Just for crashing. Is that what it's come to? Crashing is not and never was racing. I used to look forward to the dega races so I could see three wide racing. Yesterday certainly wasn't that. Was 1/64ths really supposed to make any difference? And was that the problem to begin with?

Nov 3, 2009 at 1:23 AM#4 (KDBC) I agree with you - right on the money. Glad Ryan and Mark were okay, first and foremost. NASCAR listen to the drivers? Ha Ha Ha. Unless a driver is seriously hurt in one of these Talladega pack wrecks, IE severe injury, career over, never to drive again, or worse (terminal consequences, like Dale Sr, At Daytona in 2001) NOTHING WILL CHANGE.
Report as AbuseHowever, I have an idea I think that will get Mike Helton, Brian France, John Darby's attention very quickly, and the drivers have the power here. Of course, the drivers would need to have their own meeting, and iron out the game plan here... The next Talladega race, with 10 laps left, have all the drivers go to a straight line, bumper-to-bumper. Slow down to 60 MPH. Run the remaining 10 laps at those speeds, then have all 43 cars (or cars still in the race) take the waving checkered flag at 60 MPH. NO BIG CRASH. The drivers still get their points and prize $$.
This sends a BIG MESSAGE to NASCAR the drivers want change. 60 MPH means no torn up and wrecked cars on the last few laps.
Then the loud "BOOOOOOOO" 'ing from the race fans would also get the attention and embarass NASCAR's brass.
Imagine the wordwide publicity this would generate?
What do you all think of my idea? Think about it - I feel this way truly makes a point and how we're all sick of restrictor plates ect. NASCAR wants the cars slowed down - 60 MPH on the waning laps accomplishes this and drivers, teams, don't lose their points or $$.

Nov 3, 2009 at 1:28 AMAs I see it, we have THREE problems here: Crash-Louse-Ski, NA$CAR, and THE TRACK. They ALL need fixin'. - - - But WHO is going to fix them? Certainly not NA$CAR. They are happy taking in their big bucks, even IF they are off a little. - - - IF the FANS went on strike, and didn't go to the track, THEN something MIGHT be done. A drivers strike wouldn't help; NA$CAR proved that at the very first Talladega race. So the fans NEED to stay away, UNTIL they either/or shorten the track, cut down on the banking, OR bring back the old slower cars the track was designed for. HURT the track owners, THEN something MIGHT be done. - - - Another thing that could be done is fine the drivers IF they go over 185 mph. Don't you think that would help? LOL. - - - BUT NA$CAR won't listen, you can be sure of that. This goes on after EVERY race, and has for many years. I have always hated Talladega races, and always will UNTIL they change the track. , , , Eliminate it from the chase for sure.

Nov 3, 2009 at 6:23 AMHarvick said at one point at one point in the race when he was in the lead and they were single file 'racing' "I wish I had cruise contro" Stewart said "Get me an energy drink so I can stay awake". Do the fans really enjoy this? Obviously not from these posts!
Report as AbuseI didn't! I was glad I taped the race... fast forward through all this downtime. Commercials... fast forward. Sorry sponsors!
I was horrified to see Newman flying through the air, landing first on Harvick and then going airborne again. I too was terrified that he would catch fire, be seriously injured or worse.
Then comes Mark doing a flip.
So much for an exciting cup finish!
Thanks NASCAR... I can skip the rest of the season now... not much of a chance of anyone catching Jimmie now!
I DO wish someone in the NASCAR monopoly would at least consider Ryan's offer and LISTEN to his suggestions! He is qualified to make them!

Nov 3, 2009 at 3:02 PMThe way Ray Evernham described it, the new "safer" CoT wing turns the car into an airplane at 190 MPH in reverse. Roof flaps aren't going to do anything in that scenario. Couldn't they incorporate a flap into the wing or make it a breakaway wing? Another thought... forget plates, swap out the wing for a spoiler at Dega!
Report as AbuseEasiest solution is still to just let them race minus the plates.

Nov 4, 2009 at 12:44 AMRyan ws lucky he landed on the 29, I can only imagine how this would have turned out it he hit the pavement. NASCAR needs to wake up. I have noticed more and more drivers are not thrilled to race at Talladega. I know that the fans love this track and "The Big One", but having had the oppurtunity on several ocassions to be in the garage and actualy talk to these guys I would not want to loose any one of them. All theses drivers put their lives on the line to put on a show for the fans and as a fan of this sport I would not ask that of them. I want to see a race, and if that means single file to log laps so be it. I am a long time fan of this sport and have seen many changes, I hope that the changes still to come will make the racing more exciting for everyone.

Nov 4, 2009 at 1:19 PMI thought I had tuned in a F1 race using shoe boxes going in a circle.
Report as AbuseI guess it really was a F1 race FRANCECAR 1 at its finest. This family has made about as much money off racing fans and team owners as the Walton family. NASCAR is about control FRANCECAR control, they are going to do what's best for them, not drivers, team owners, fans, nobody except FRANCECAR. And if you don't like it go somewhere else.... wait there is nowhere else. FRANCECAR companies own or control most of the tracks. Sounds alot like a monopoly to me. Team owners can't get enough sponsers to field the cars they have now. So I guess starting another racing series using "stock cars" would be hopeless.
