INDIANAPOLIS – Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle was pleased to gain ground in the NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings Sunday, but said that his fourth-place finish in the Allstate 400 was somewhat tough to take.
Biffle was running third with five laps to go, but gave up one position to Stewart-Haas Racing's Tony Stewart in the closing laps as Biffle focused on conserving fuel. While his fourth-place finish was his best since running third at Dover in May, Biffle admitted that willingly giving up a spot was tough to do.
"We were third there with five to go and I just had to let Tony Stewart go," Biffle said. "That just hurts so bad, just to let up on the gas for no reason and let a guy go by you, but I had to save enough fuel to finish. Michigan was replaying in my mind when I ran out of gasoline with half a lap, so I did what I had to do."
Biffle's fourth-place finish moved him back to 11th in the Sprint Cup standings with six races to go before the field for the Chase For The Sprint Cup is set. Biffle, who was 13th in the standings when the race started, is 84 points ahead of the new driver in 13th, Michael Waltrip Racing's David Reutimann.
Overall, he recognized the value of his performance as far as the big picture - and that makes the loss of one spot easier to take.
"It was a good points day for us, and we need every point we can get right now," he said. "We just couldn't take a chance on losing the positions - running it out. I hate to give up five points to Tony, but we're gonna run good at Pocono and we're gonna run good at Michigan coming up. I'm confident we're gonna get back in this thing."
