Rodney Childers named Wypall crew chief of Coca-Cola 600
Rodney Childers, crew chief for the No. 00 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota driven by David Reutimann, has been named the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following his victory in Monday's rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Childers made the call to keep Reutimann on the track during the lap-222 caution for rain. Reutimann, who had been running 14th, inherited the lead with the call. The race ran only four more laps - all under caution - before it was red-flagged for the rain and then, just over two hours later, ruled complete.
"It certainly wasn't the prettiest win, but Childers told me stay out, and he made a great call," Reutimann said.
Both he and Childers earned their initial Cup wins in the race.
Bob Osborne, crew chief for the No. 99 Roush Fenway Ford of Carl Edwards, Todd Berrier, crew chief for the No. 07 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet of Casey Mears, and Fox/Speed analyst Jeff Hammond, along with representatives from the Wypall Wipers brand, serve as the panel for the weekly award. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at the season finale in Homestead, Fla.
